Yorkshire's Independent Restaurant Guide

The Good Food Guide 2012

Mandy raved over her visit to Sheffield’s Kitchen earlier this year when she reviewed it for Squidbeak and now the new edition of the Good Food Guide  2012 (published on 8th Sept) has named it ‘Best Value for Money’ restaurant in Britain with Salvo’s in Leeds picking up the regional award for north east ‘Readers’ Restaurant of the Year’

The Good Food Guide is the best and most opinionated of the national food guides and Yorkshire gets a fair crack this year with 80 entries. Top marks predictably go to the Burlington Restaurant at the Devonshire Arms Hotel at Bolton Abbey, the Yorke Arms at Ramsgill, The Box Tree in Ilkley and Anthony’s in Leeds. We like all them all, even if they are top of the price range.

Following closely are some Squidbeak favourites like the Star and the Pheasant both at Harome, the Fox and Hounds at Goldsborough near Whitby, Artisan at Hessle, El Gato Negro at Ripponden and the Pipe and Glass at South Dalton with J. Bakers and Melton’s making it for York.

Regular followers of The Good Food Guide will be looking for new entries so here they are for Yorkshire: Kitchen and the Wig and Pen in Sheffield, Van Zeller’s in Harrogate and the charming DeClare Deli Café in York but there are also a lot of new ‘Reader Recommendations’. If you want to see your favourites included be sure to send your feedback to the GFG to get them included next year.

As for the rest of the country, there are far too many places to list here – 600 pages – but if you want to eat your way through the top 50 restaurants in the UK here are the top five to get you started:

The Fat Duck, Bray, Berkshire
L’Enclume, Cartmel, Cumbria
Restaurant Sat Bains, Nottingham
Gordon Ramsay, Royal Hospital Road, London
Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, Rock, Cornwall
