Our chef Lisa Chapman was owner of the much-loved Endeavour restaurant in Staithes for twelve years. She took the restaurant straight into the Good Food Guide where it stayed throughout her tenure. Since leaving the Endeavour Lisa has cooked at all sorts of outside events and runs her own excellent delicatessen and café ‘To Dine For’ in Hinderwell where she prepares fresh seasonal dishes to eat in or take away.
The Staithes Gallery is in a fine Georgian building at the heart of the old village. Upstairs has a splendid dining room and downstairs showcases the very best contemporary art inspired by the sea, the cliffs, the moors and the people of the area in a village that has always been a magnet for artists.
It was to Staithes that a young Laura Johnson (later Dame Laura Knight) came after being told by her art teacher to ‘Go to Staithes, there is no place like it in all the world for painting.’ That was the start of what became the Staithes Group of artists, a group of young British impressionists whose fame spread worldwide. The village still welcomes artists today, some of whom enroll on the residential art courses held at the gallery.
It was the convivial dinners cooked by Lisa for the Staithes Art School courses that prompted us to link up with Lisa and the Staithes Gallery for these occasional dinners.
The evening begins at 7.15pm in the gallery with a welcome drink and a chance to view the work on show. We will then move upstairs for dinner. Lisa is happy to accommodate food allergies, intolerances, vegetarians and any special dietary requirements and these can be discussed with Alison when you book. Payment will be taken in full in advance.
If you fancy staying over for the weekend take at look at the reviews on Squidbeak for Ash Cottage, Laura Knight’s Studio and the Longhouse. As well as these lovely self catering cottages there are lots of options in the village or nearby in Runswick, Sandsend and Whitby.
Seats are limited, so book your place now with Alison Milnes: [email protected] or telephone 01947 841840/07972 012464.
