Special mention for Supper Collective a community of York independent restaurants and food suppliers delivering free of charge, 150+ nutritious meals every day for the isolated, vulnerable homeless and frontline NHS workers. They distribute within the city and surrounding areas.
The project was started by Julia Holding and her husband of the Pig and Pastry on Bishopthorpe Road. They’ve been joined by many local restaurants and suppliers. New ones are added each week, but to date, the following are cooking meals or supplying ingredients which are distributed by a team of volunteers.
Rattle Owl, Roots, Skosh, Chopping Block, Le Cochon Aveugle, Haxby Bakehouse, Source, @Daughtercafe, the Hog and Apple event company, M & K Butchers, Dough Eyed Pizza, Brew & Brownie, Millies, Little Italy, Spilman’s Asparagus, Sand Hutton asparagus, Harvey’s Cheese, Swillington Organics, Parlormade Café, Rocket and Russet, Yorkshire Fungi and more.
It’s been a great success, the Telegraph awarding them their Lockdown Award for Best Community Project and they recently secured a lottery grant of £10,000 which has allowed them to cover the cost of produce, to pay the out of pocket expenses of volunteers and to spread their net wider.
