Yorkshire's Independent Restaurant Guide

Whitby Deli, Whitby

I’m not sure why it’s taken us so long to blow the trumpet about this caff because it’s rather special, and that rare thing; a Whitby cafe that’s not themed, but more importantly, their coffee is bloody marvellous. It’s at the top of Flowergate in a building that’s had several incarnations in the last couple of years – I do hope this young couple make a better go of it than their predecessors because overnight it’s become our regular haunt, and judging by the faces we see every time we go it’s not just us.

On the blackboard, choose from the All Day Brunch (includes home made granola & fruit compote, an ‘epic’ sausage sandwich and a Harrogate bacon roll) then move on to a grazing board – perhaps the Mighty Meat Platter with charcuturie from the counter or the fabulous Ploughmans (Richard III Wensleydale, Brie, pork pie and scotch egg with balsamic onions and bread.) I can vouch for that one. Elsewhere, wholesome home made soup and fab toasties – The Classic is just that, cheese and ham, served on a tin plate with real ale chutney. Perfect after a bracing trot on the beach.

Stock up on very groovy storecupboard staples – man that colourful packaging is sooo hard to resist! Take home local cheese too for your supper, not forgetting a jar of home made chutney – the spicy gooseberry and coriander really is a winner.
