Wheatsheaf Inn, Egton
Oh how we love to fall into here after a bracing yomp in the rain on the wild moors! A proper snug, with roaring fire, battered chairs and pints of well kept beer, a welcome as warm as toast and plates of proper food. On our last visit, ox tail cooked forever in the slow oven, arrived sticky and sweet with mash and a smile. Wood pigeon breast on toast with sloe gin sauce for a tenner was pretty irresistible, too. And a bowl of salty, crispy potato skin chips is the best £1.50 side order.
