Yorkshire's Independent Restaurant Guide

Scampston Walled Garden, Scampston

We are not making any great claims for the food, our latest visit was disappointing, but if you are in the vicinity, then the Walled Garden at Scampston Hall is a must-see. It was created by contemporary garden designer Piet Oudolf in 1999 and though much imitated, it is unlike any other. Set out as a series of ‘rooms’, it has formal hedges, unusual topiary, drifts of grasses and much more.

The rather glamorous glass and blonde wood edifice that is the Walled Garden Cafe is an attractive lunch spot on a sunny afternoon either inside or out on the pretty stone flagged patio. It’s self-service with sandwiches, soup, salads, cake and the like. You can visit without paying the garden entrance fee, but then you would be missing a treat.
