Rowntree Park Reading Cafe, York

God bless Messrs Rowntree & Company for bequeathing to the city of York the lovely Rowntree Park, built in 1921 to commemorate the 200 staff who were killed or suffered during the WW1, with the aim of improving the life and well-being of their staff and the people of York.

That’s quite a legacy. Rowntree Park remains today a delightfully traditional, municipal park, immaculately maintained with lawns, bedding plants, ornamental lake, tennis courts, playground and skate park.

That’s not all. Last year, the city’s Library Services created the Library Reading Café and if that sounds a bit local gov. believe me it’s not. The old Edwardian tearoom with a view of the duck pond is lovely. It’s been nicely Farrow & Ball’d with chalky blue panelling, a light oak floor and comfy chairs upholstered in modern checks. The walls, of course, are lined with books.

So settle down with a newspaper, magazine or paperback or just partake in people watching from the little outdoor balcony. They serve simple snacks, good cakes and decent tea and coffee. It’s a family friendly place with loads of kids, so be prepared for the odd tantruming parent.

Opening times are changeable. In winter they’re around 10am-3.30pm but longer in summer. Great idea, great place, especially after a sunny riverside walk or bike ride.
