Ex Le Gavroche, ex head chef of Melton’s, Annie Prescott took on this whitewashed roadhouse just beyond the roar of York’s outer ring road in 2009. It’s nothing fancy, just simple wholesome dishes, precisely timed and beautifully presented. Try her pork terrine with piccalilli; trout, haddock and spring onion fishcakes; steak with garlic butter or sausages with onion gravy. More adventurous specials might run to sautéed crayfish tails in garlic butter or Yorkshire venison but everything is spot on including homely puds like syrup sponge and custard or a perfect pannacotta with strawberries. No mad ‘squidbeakery’ here just honest-to-goodness food and prices to match.
