Yorkshire's Independent Restaurant Guide

Partisan, York

We do like Partisan. It’s a relaxed, laid back place with scrubbed tables, original art, vintage furniture courtesy of their tie in with the antique shop, the French House. Our sort of place.

It’s run by Florencia Clifford and Hugo Hildyard. Florencia is Argentinian by birth, while her Scottish, Italian and French heritage and time in the US gives Partisan a global reach that is fully indulged.

The food is exciting, original and packed with flavour and while they offer both meat and fish dishes they pay proper respect to fruit and vegetables using plantains, pomegranate, sweet potato and the humble cauliflower all to brilliant effect.

I don’t know anywhere else in York that serves Persian eggs (scrambled with spinach, onions, dates, yoghurt, dukkah) for breakfast or for that matter, Mexican eggs (fried eggs, refried beans, avocado, salsa, sour cream) along with the regular full English or veggie breakfast.

At lunch you can head for Bibimbap (spicy rice, beef, mushrooms, veg, fried egg, kimchi) or their best selling aubergine parmigiana before moving on to delicious cakes and sweet things.

Post lockdown the tables have been reduced inside but a tent outside in their garden permits more covers and of course there is a takeaway menu.

You’ll find Partisan featured on our Favourite page and now with Brancusi, an evening restaurant a few doors down.
