Yorkshire's Independent Restaurant Guide

Muse Music & Love Cafe, Hebden Bridge

It’s a love affair! Not just the pairing of a great music shop and good coffee but between the couple who deliver them. Sid Jones has been selling vinyl (and subsequently CDs) since 1997, and one fine day his old friend Valeen walked in, their eyes met over oh let’s say Dark Side of the Moon and lurve struck.

Then the recent floods devastated most of the shops on Market Street, including this one. Sid and Valeen got hitched and decided to re-build the business together – this time with as many flood precautions in place as possible – and added a cool cafe. And what a lovely job they’ve made of it. Down one side, Sid’s eclectic tunes for browsing, down the other Valeen’s colourful, cheery caff, a glass cabinet bursting with home made cake (the treacle and cornflake slice is marvellous) and a gleaming La Spaziale coffee machine which she absolutely knows how to use. Unlike some. Naming no names.

There’s no shortage of cafes in Hebden but the ones really worth spending your money in can be found on Squidbeak. Nuff said.

Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11-6 (4 on Sundays, unless you’re having a good time in which case you’re not going to get chucked out)
