Yorkshire's Independent Restaurant Guide

Kiosk: Project Space, York

Fossgate has become a real hub, not just for independent shops in York but for good food and drink. There’s the tiny Blue Bell tavern, the Hop for wood fired pizzas, the Hairy Fig for deli goodies, a bunch of estimable restaurants and now Kiosk.

Kiosk is an art gallery and café run by Rebecca and Russel Carr who in the tiniest space manage to welcome guests and on our visit a tiny guest in a pushchair. In such a squash the menu is inevitably simple but rather fabulous. Open from 8.30 am (10 am at the weekend) when you can breakfast on porridge with honey, nuts and seeds; smoked bacon sandwich in Haxby sourdough; scrambled egg and chorizo or the full fry up. From 12 noon there is squash and pearl barley ‘risotto’ with the clever touch of crispy fried sage; smoked haddock and butterbeans; leek fritters with herby yoghurt and pickled carrots and to finish fabulous cakes from the talented patissiere, Shuti Shuti.

As for the art there’s Rebecca Carr’s relaxed clothing range (think Toast), beautiful studio pottery by Catherine and Matt West and Jono Smart, oil paintings, jewellery and textiles. It’s an all round delight.
