Yorkshire's Independent Restaurant Guide

Fika North, Leeds

FIKA: a state of mind, a concept, an attitude. It’s tricky to pin down but it’s an integral part of Swedish life, taking time out of every day to spend time with friends or your squeeze, having a coffee and bite to eat. Or, as we know it, having a cuppa with your mate. Owners Gemma and Elis Williams know a thing or two about making customers happy – they’ve had jobs on super yachts, and I’m guessing that if you can please the likes of Philip Green …

Far Headingley is a fair distance from the Med but this cheerful couple have found their land legs and created a friendly, warm space – albeit tiny – where mums, millennials and dog walkers gather to drink great coffee roasted by Casa Espresso in Shipley, eat very good bread from Sheffield’s Cawa Bakery and fabulous cinnamon and cardamom cakes made daily by Gemma. Tuck in to a home made beans on sourdough brunch with cool tunes wafting on the air, smart art on the walls, and more than likely a nudge from cute house dog Nelly. In these uncertain times, we could all do with a bit more fika.
