‘A little bit of what you fancy does you good!’ is the message on the wall of Feast, the recent add-on to Pickering’s reliably elegant White Swan hotel next door. And why not? It’s a cafe/deli with a menu that is straightforwardly pleasing; scotch egg & piccalilli (4.95) smoked trout & horseradish cream sandwich (5.95) and peaches, ham & mozzarella salad (7.25). There’s good coffee, hot chocolate and Luscombe organic cider if you’re feeling frisky. It was chock-a-block when I called in; the North York Moors steam train had just disgorged its cargo and clearly they had taste as they’d made a bee-line for Feast, but manager Marion Buchanan was making short work of it, cheerfully and effortlessly.
