If you were a fan of the Cleveland Tontine, in its glory days of parasols, leopard prints and ferns you’ll like the Crathorne Arms a whitewashed pub in the far reaches of North Yorkshire.

It has the same lived-in look, the generous sofas, the vintage lamps, the mismatched china, the rough old tables, the log fire and busying around the bar in his tartan slacks is the man himself, Eugene McCoy one of three brothers who for 40 years made the Tontine the go-to restaurant of the 80’s.

The menu will be familiar to old Tontine hands: seafood pancake, prawn cocktail, moules mariniere, venison loin, duck confit, burgers with crumbles and brownies to finish. There’s a fixed price lunchtime menu and early doors at (£19.95/three courses), bar snacks, tea and scones and a very good wine list and choice of real ales. The Music Room hosts regular live gigs and there’s a courtyard in which to eat, drink and while away sunny afternoons.
