Yorkshire's Independent Restaurant Guide

Brew & Brownie, York

If you were offered a pancake stack with maple syrup, streaky bacon and blueberries or a peanut butter sandwich with jam and banana, where would you be – LA, Boston, New York? No course not, you’d be in Brew & Brownie in old York.

This gorgeous little coffee shop is the latest in a growing number of cool cafs that have sprung up in York over the last couple of years. With its white ‘dairy’ tiles, brown paper menus, distressed wooden counter and jam jar lampshade it feels very Hoxton, but the owners Gina and Aidy have brought some welcome street-style to York’s Museum Street.

The food too is just what you want morning, noon or afternoon – they close at 5pm. Porridge, granola, a doorstep bacon sandwich, savoury muffin or one of those pancake stacks. Sandwiches offer far more than ham and cheese (although their leek and three cheese toastie with extra ham is splendid) but what about Yorkshire Blue, pear and walnut; goats’ cheese fig and olive or an ‘eeh bah gum’ board of pork pie, roast ham, roast beef, cheese and sour dough. The counter offers lovely cakes, muffins, scones, all those things we love and we guarantee you will too. Cheers Brew & Brownie.

Now with the Brew & Brownie Bakeshop two doors down.
