Inn at Whitewell Forest of Bowland

We strayed over the Lancashire/Yorkshire border last weekend for an exploration of the Trough of Bowland and treated ourselves to a stay at the Inn at Whitewell. The Trough may be an unknown gem, (a beautiful valley running from near Lancaster to Dunsop Bridge near Clitheroe) but the Inn leapt to TV fame when Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon sparred with each other over dinner in the very first episode of The Trip.  If our dinner was more sound than remarkable - gravadlax followed by steak and chips - our room was special: acres of space, a brass bedstead, desk, sofa, music, books, magazines and a fireplace that was not just for show; in a scene straight out of Downton, someone came and lit it while I soaked in the bath, a huge great tub, edged with marble in a beautiful oak paneled bathroom.  Just the job after a damp tramp over a nearby fell.

How much? £204 midweek, more at weekend, includes breakfast.

Kids Stuff? Yes, kids welcome.

Well placed? Absolutely. In the heart of the Trough of Bowland with plenty of nearby walking routes. It overlooks the Hodder with rods available for trout, sea trout and salmon fishing in season.

Good grub? Eat in the bar or the restaurant from a menu of trusted dishes. And after you’ve checked out drop in to Clitheroe for D. Byrne & Co., the ultimate wine merchant, and the stunning new gastro palace that is Holmes Mill. Might have to move home…
