We have recently strayed beyond Yorkshire to the far reaches of Scotland and can heartily recommend this very excellent B & B on the Isle of Skye. Run by Yorkshireman Neil Hope, it is an architect-designed gem overlooking Broadford Bay and it’s quite stunning.
Enter the front door by means of a footbridge and you are in the first floor dining cum sitting room, a beautiful room filled with books with a double height ceiling and a wall of glass that brings that sea view right into the room.
On the floor below, the three bedrooms all face the sea and glass doors give on to a terrace and garden. Rooms are smartly decorated with restrained touches of tartan against crisp white linen. Bathrooms with more sea view windows, are immaculate and everywhere there are considerate touches like books and magazines in your room, a range of teas, fresh milk and a fridge to keep your food shopping or the place to chill a bottle of wine.
Neil is a skilled and enthusiastic cook as witnessed by his collection of cookery books and his fabulous breakfasts. Start with freshly baked fruit muffins then choose porridge or Skye smoked salmon, crowdie, fresh fruit, fresh orange juice – that’s proper freshly squeezed – and a full Scottish cooked to order: bacon, eggs, sausage, Stornoway black pudding, smoked haddie, kippers, the works, all precisely cooked and perfect. After that you will want to get out and explore Skye but you could just as easily while away the time browsing the library and Neil’s very comprehensive book collection with a tray of tea and the shortest of shortbread. There are good places to eat nearby, but enquire about Neil’s evening meals too.
