Drive through the pretty village and up the hill to find this elegant old farmhouse, dripping with wisteria in the summer. I'm not going to pretend it's boutique - actually it's about as far from boutique as it's possible to get. In fact it's unashamedly old fashioned, in the best way. Jane Otter has lived here for decades and it's one of the most comfortable, cosy B&B's I've seen in a while. It's full of family photos and Jane has something of a collecting habit, so at every turn you'll see china and coloured glass, old paintings and fine furniture.
There's a double and and a twin, both immaculate and warm with views over the ancient church or the lush valley - neither are en suite, a rarity these days but it really doesn't seem to matter - the vintage dressing tables seem to make up for it. The charming dining room is dark red and you'll enjoy eating your porridge or fruit salad with a silver spoon. Jane will cook you up a full English too, of course. The elegant sitting room, full of light and flowers is all squishy sofas and swags at the gorgeous Georgian windows. If you ask nicely, her sweet dog will come and sit on your feet. Jane will make a grand cuppa and offer a plate of her fab cakes on arrival - usually in the huge, chaotic kitchen in front of the aga. Jane's put her all into her family home, and you can feel the love.
How much: from 90 to 110
Kid's stuff: it's more a hideaway for grown ups
Well placed: fabulous walks from the door - you're on the edge of the North Yorks Moors so the world's your oyster. It's always worth a trip round Pickering - jump on the steam train to Grosmont and back for a real treat.
Good grub: The Fox & Hounds in the village offers very good pub grub. Just a short drive into Pickering you'll find The White Swan, and even nearer The Star at Harome, one of our fave places. If it's a cafe you're after, the Middleton Tea Parlour is a winner, or if you take that train ride, the Old School Coffee Shop in Grosmont is fab.
