Since this review La Feria has relocated to a bigger restaurant on Cold Bath Road with an expanded menu. Roast chicken still takes centre stage but there are now salads, cheeses, charcuterie and tapas. When we have visited we will review it again.
When all you serve is chicken it has to be good. At La Feria they do a whole, half or quarter free-range chicken that has been marinated in oil and lemon, rubbed with cumin and paprika and then turned on a rotisserie for 90 minutes. The result is very good… for a chicken: moist and luscious.
Chicken has long been an everyday staple, not much of a treat you might think, so to base a restaurant entirely on the familiar old bird might seem a bit mad, but owner Jez Verity got the idea from the simple bars of Andalucia that serve a short, limited menu and takeaway, so in 2014 he decided to see if the same thing would work in Harrogate and it seems he was right. The little front room on Royal Parade - a former antique shop, roughed up with distressed doors, industrial lighting and vintage café chairs – is regularly booked out.
To say they only serve chicken is not quite accurate. With the chicken are sides of fries, aioli and salad and a handful of starters: Iberico ham, chorizo in sherry, sharing boards of Spanish sausage, Manchego, smoked almonds, olives and for pudding vanilla ice cream with PX sherry, trifle, chocolate/orange torte and orange cake.
Prices are reasonable £17 for a whole chicken, £10 for half, £6.50 for a quarter and £20 for a takeaway of whole chicken and chips and salad for two.
