Krave Deli Wilsden

The wind-blown Pennine town of Wilsden is not the first place you expect to find a wood-fired pizza oven, a funky herb garden, Italian pastries, white truffle salami or Mr Vikki’s hot pickle, but then Wilsden has Christian Lambert the energetic creator of this loveable little deli/café/streetfood HQ.

There are just two tables in the tiny shop on the Main Street with more tables in the back garden for summer eating and where his portable wood-fired oven sits ready to go out to street food events all over the county, so if you spot him, get queuing,  it will be worth the wait.

Back in the caf, the menu is chalked up behind the counter where a shiny Gaggia machine hisses willing you to order a decent double espresso.  Without waiting to be asked, the lovely uni student on duty for our visit  brings, water, menus, a complimentary dish of olives, oh and a smile. Now if only bigger, smarter, pricier places would prioritise these things.

The food is generous, gutsy, filling, thedayafterthenightbefore kinda food. Burgers, for instance, contain 100% Yorkshire beef, melted Emmental, crisp onion rings, pickles, aioli, chilli (Krave sure likes its chilli), all loaded into a bun, alongside their own made coleslaw, salad and, eat your heart out Heston, the hottest, crispest, triple-cooked chips I can recall.  The whole thing will stop you in your tracks

There’s pulled pork slow cooked in Coca Cola too,  chilli meatballs, soup of the day, dish of the day and a changing choice of sandwiches and cakes to go with your luxurious marshmallow-topped hot chocolate or your cappuccino. On Saturday they do curries for eating in or takeaway and breakfast any day.

You’ve guessed we’re not talking poncy fine dining.  This is comfort eating, all day fuel, made with reliable ingredients and by an exuberant friend of food.
