Well it's clearly not a cottage. But it is fabulous. Katrina and Derek Gray have won more gongs for their wonderful Wolds B&B than you can shake a stick at, which gives you an idea of how special it is. Originally a Georgian Gentleman's country retreat it sits grandly in 300 acres of farmland most of which you can gaze at from the stunning breakfast room whilst you're tucking in to fruit from the garden.
It's a cliche but you literally sweep down the drive. Katrina's welcome is proper Yorkshire (ie warm) and the first thing that hits you apart from that is the generous, elegant proportions of the rooms - they're huge, with high ceilings and full length windows, but somehow it feels cosy, intimate.
Bedrooms are big and beautifully done out with antique beds, fabulous linen, impressive fabric swags at the windows (from which, long, long views) and every last detail has been considered; the Greys have been doing this for years and they know which way is up. Bathrooms have recently been updated, so alongside the deeply traditional bedrooms are completely cutting edge wet rooms and free standing claw foot baths - and rather sexy lighting!
There are many great things about this place: the quiet. The luxury. The welcome. The breakfasts. The proximity to wonderfully rolling Wolds countryside - still the country's best kept secret. I've been visiting this great B&B for half a dozen years and I love the way Katrina and Derek move with the times - always tweaking, never standing still. Their committment to your pleasure and comfort is absolute.
How Much: From 55 pounds pppn.
Kid's Stuff: Your well-behaved youngsters are welcome
Well Placed: Hockney Heaven! Many of the great man's painting locations are within a 10 mile radius from here, so take your iPad and pretend. Burton Agnes Hall holds arguably the best collection of impressionist art in the land. RSPB Bempton is a wonderful place; cliffs, seabirds, wild walks. A brilliant place to blow the cobwebs away.
Good Grub: The Michelin starred Pipe & Glass is near, and if you've booked for dinner, spend the day in beautiful Beverley - there's plenty to do and see. You could call the Star at Sancton a gastropub, but it's a warm, friendly, family run place and the food is just fab.
