If you fancy York but don't want to stay in the city, this elegant Grade 11 listed Georgian Gentleman's Residence could be the answer. It's a five minute walk to the Park & Ride too, so leave the car at home and save yourself a small fortune on parking!
Friendly, laid back owner Kath Doggett has worked wonders; photos of the renovation illustrate just how close to the wrecking ball the old place had been before she rescued it. And what a fabulous job she's done. Lots of features are restored or replaced and it's got an airy, light-filled interior. Kath's a professional flower arranger so expect lots of lovely displays, and her arty eye has lit on the bedrooms too.
Luxurious linens, fabulous heavy brocades at the floor to ceiling windows and huge antique sleigh beds beckon; most rooms have original fireplaces and high ceilings and tons of space; bathrooms are kind of old-fashioned but spotless - and just listen to that?! What? Nothing. Stillness. Heaven.
Breakfast (the usual fare but with Kath's home made jam and honey from Poppleton bees) at a big table with other guests, walk round the massive, mature walled garden with Kath's two rescue mutts for company or borrow a bike and explore the charming village. The fleshpots of York are 5 miles away if your legs can take it.
How Much: From 80 pounds per room per night
Kid's Stuff: Kath prefers grown ups
Well Placed: The Park & Ride to York (or pushbike!) will take you the wondrous city where the list of things to do and see just gets longer. Beningbrough and Nunnington Halls and Fountains Abbey are close.
Good Grub: The Red Lion at nearby Knapton is a trad pub but with an interesting, contemporary menu.
