The Wolds. A stunning part of Yorkshire and chronically under-visited despite the Hockney Factor. There are many reasons to go and Tor Carver’s wonderful cottages are just two of them. Positioned at the edge of rolling parkland on the edge of the Hotham House Estate, they’re Edwardian lodges, and Tor’s spent no small amount of money and a huge amount of imagination restoring them so that you can stay in them.
She’s wisely kept lots of features but brought the whole shebang up to date, so the kitchens are sleek and contemporary (6 ring gas stoves, Shaker cupboards, granite worktops, bright white crockery and every gismo you’ll ever need and more) the pale paletted living areas comfortable and contemporary – but with one or two interesting pieces like the chunky ex-library table in the kitchen/diner.
Upstairs there’s a New England vibe; carpets are light and wool, beds have the fattest mattresses and linen is White Company. Bathrooms have sex appeal – one has a free standing claw foot bath, the other a white-tiled wet room. Outside, safe, private lawns beckon al fresco breakfasts on warm days. Tor can organize private catering from her talented Thai chef – what a treat! You’ll be greeted with one of her fabulous lemon drizzle cakes too – and veg from her greenhouse when it’s in season. There are walks/bike rides from the door and any number of charming Wolds towns and villages to explore. What’s keeping you?
How Much: £425 to £875 for a break/a week: sleeps 6
Kids’ Stuff: Kids are welcome – it’s a safe spot too, so let them run free.
Well Placed: The Hockney Trail really is worth spending at least a day on. Skidby Mill is the last working flour mill in Yorkshire and still grinds bread flour – watch the paddles turn and buy the goods! Larkin fans will love Hull (25 mins drive) and stunning Georgian Beverley is a short hop.
Good Grub: The Michelin starred Pipe & Glass is a stone’s throw (and is rightly in our Top Ten). The Star at Sancton is a sensational pub; young chef Ben Cox will delight you with his twist on Yorkshire puds.
