We bring you chic, thatched, historic and downright sexy. Now we deliver A National Treasure. Well National Trust but it doesn’t scan so well.
On a heathery hillside rolling down to the headland above Ravenscar, this former Alum mine manager’s house is a cracker. Just check out the location! Play Motorhead as loud as you like, no one’s going to knock on the door and demand you turn it down to 11.
It’s got tons of character; paneled walls, beams, old fireplaces and huge windows to exploit the endless views over the sea. Two comfortable, spacious bedrooms with lovely linen and deep mattresses ensure a good night’s sleep after days spent fossilling, frolicking and generally having bucket & spade fun on any number of fab nearby beaches.
I spent a couple of nights there recently and didn’t hear a peep other than wildlife squeaking, flapping and yelling. Actually it was quite noisy. The countryside’s deafening, isn’t it?
Despite the long windy access track you don’t need an SUV, just a bit of nerve and a steady head. The sense of leaving the world behind as you get out of the car, gaze out over the briny and breathe that ozone is thrilling.
How Much: From £300 for 3 nights, £462 to £1190 for a week.
Kids’s Stuff: Yep, lots of room for all ages and a safe garden – just keep them away from the cliff edge!
Well Placed: Eee tons to do. Scarborough is 12 miles down the road,Whitby, Robin Hoods’s Bay, Runswick, Sandsend and Staithes a spit to the North. The rather rambling but magnificent Raven Hall Hotel is a stumble up the track; check out the extraordinary Italianate gardens with jaw-dropping vistas built by George 111’s doctor and inveterate gambler, Frances Willis.
Good Grub: The Wheatsheaf at Egton is one of our fave eating pubs. Get a good steak and ale pie at the Bay Hotel in Robin Hoods Bay; sit on the 1st floor balcony which hangs over the sea – amazing. Find good coffee and cake at Sabina Wilson’s bijou caff (just three tables!) on the high street in RHB. For a totally special night out, The Fox & Hounds is unmissable.
