Low Farm Rosedale Abbey

Rosedale is one of those sleepy villages on the North Yorkshire Moors that you have to cook up a reason to drive to: it’s not on the way to anywhere (unless you fancy approaching the coast via the perilous single track road which cuts a heart-stopping cleft through the unbelievably bleak moorland moonscape).

But now you’ve got every reason to head there. Climb up the winding lane from the middle of the village towards that terrifying track, and glance through the rear view mirror to see the makings of a vista. As you pull into Linda and Andrew’s smartly graveled drive, our advice is to get out of the car empty-handed, because whatever you’re carrying will be dropped as the full impact of the view kicks in.

We scout any number of B&Bs in great locations for you, but this one stopped us in our tracks. The gently undulating farmland rolls away from you and doesn’t appear to stop. In the springtime, brilliant white hawthorn breaks the endless green and Simpson’s clouds scud across vast skies. A neat, sheltered garden with rustic chairs exploits the views, and if you ask Linda nicely, she’ll serve your home made fruit salad (or Whitby kipper) breakfast out there on sunny mornings.

I suppose you’d like to know about the bedrooms? Well they’re charming and quirky with lovely linen (fresh blue & white toile in the twin room, ivory in the sleigh-bedded double) both with spotless, light-filled bathrooms and plenty of storage space. On chilly nights cuddle up with a cute hottie (bottle that is.)

There’s plenty to do in this neck of the woods but honestly, why would you want to stray too far? My inclination (after a morning constitutional of course) would be to kick it back with a good book and gaze at that extraordinary landscape.

How Much?                      From £40 pppn

Kid’s Stuff?                      Not really – this is a place for YOU time

Well Placed?                    The pretty market towns of Pickering, Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside are nearby. Visit stunning Riveaulx Abbey, Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall.

Good Grub?                      Get good pub grub at the Blacksmiths Arms at Hartoft just down the road. A bit further afield (but worth the drive) are the White Swan in Pickering (and its sister deli/café Feast next door) or push the boat right out with one of our all-time favourites The Star at Harome.
