If you’re walking along the blustery headland between Staithes and Runswick Bay, this is the place to drop in to. Is it a pub or a caff? Well it was the former and is now the latter. There are a couple of nods to its boozy former life (scrubbed oak floors, cast iron fireplaces) and whilst you can still have a (bottled) beer or glass of (organic) wine, it’s the coffee and cake we go for: you’ll get a good espresso from a hissing Gaggia, and the home made cake is yummy.
Sit at one of the chunky wooden tables by the fire or by an old-skool cast iron radiator or on a good day, there’s a charming garden at the back with long views over the hills. There are a couple of pretty bedrooms too, one with a rather glamorous antique brass four-poster, both with lovely cotton linen and fluffy white towels.
It’s open just at the weekends and Bank Holidays, so your window of opportunity is small – but grab it!
