The White Swan Hotel is a lovely old coaching inn on Market Place, Pickering and there’s nowhere better for a good glass of wine than a seat in the bow window of the snug.
All the public rooms, in fact, maximise, authentic period features and overnight guests can settle in to ultra smart bedrooms, ancient and modern.
They call the main hotel the ‘Vintage Inn’. Expect up and down corridors, uneven floorboards and gorgeous bedrooms with pure cotton sheets, traditional drapes, antique furniture and walls in muted shades of cream and taupe.
If your style is more contemporary then ask for one of the nine rooms in the converted stable block across the car park. For my taste these are on the money with deep mattresses, crisp sheets, sumptuous throws, heaps of cushions and modern furnishings. Bathrooms are state of the art with White Company toiletries and when you pad about the bedroom the underfloor heating on the York stone flags will warm your cockles.
Dinner is a treat – casually around the fire in the bar or in the dining room twinkling in the candlelight.
