Feversham Arms Hotel & Spa Helmsley

When Jill and Simon Rhatigan first came to the Feversham Arms hotel, they transformed a modest country inn into a glamorous small and stylish hotel and spa, picking up countless positive reviews and awards on the way. Then in the summer of 2011, in a surprise move, the Rhatigans sold up and moved on. The hotel have been  tight lipped about what happened next. Our enqurieis revealed that the directorship went first to Roddy Whiteford and then swiftly moved on to Andrew Jamieson who made the short hop from the Black Swan next door.

We look forward to new reports on the Fev. In the meantime we're told it's business as usual from the 30 degree heated swimming pool, beautifully floodlit at night, to the Verbena Spa, the comfortable public rooms where the full works afternoon tea is served on a tiered cake stand with lunch and dinner in the elegant dining room.

The 33 bedrooms are equally gorgeous. Take a poolside suite with its own front door and wood burning stove or one of the new spa suites done out in muted shades and William Morris wallpaper.

The suites have their own sitting room and terrace and everything you could possibly need for a sybaritic weekend: CD and DVD collection, books, games, music, proper art on the walls. In the bathroom: robes, top of the range toiletries and double ended baths to soak away the stress you arrived with. And when you slip into bed naturally it's Egyptian cotton sheets. It’s all gorgeous with gorgeous prices to match of course.

How Much: Not cheap: £230 per room. Look out for seasonal offers and reduced two night breaks.

Kids Stuff: Children welcome. High tea served at 5.30pm and permitted in the restaurant until 8pm

Well Placed:  In the centre of bustling Helmsley, for market, shops and the lovely Helmsley Walled Garden. It’s on the edge of the North York Moors so that means great walking country.

Good grub:  Eat here first but then there is the famous Star Inn and the Pheasant Inn a couple of miles away at Harome. The White Swan at Ampleforth and the Carpenters Arms at Felixkirk are both good food pubs when you’ve overdone the gastro bit.
