There are plenty of lace-curtain-chintz-hell B&B's in Helmsley, and none of them cheap. This one is by far and away my favourite spot, unless I’m pushing the boat out and staying at the Feversham. No 54 is two Duncombe Park cottages knocked together, and owner Lizzie Would has created a tiny slice of heaven, all cream walls, rugs on flagged floors, cute painted furniture and open fires.
She’s an interesting, interested woman who loves what she does, which is to make your stay as comfortable as possible with great style. Yummy cakes and a big pot of tea are yours on arrival, and her breakfasts are exceptional, with home made bread, muffins and preserves and very good local bacon and sausages.
Bedrooms are immaculate, quirky and comfy, with lovely linen, hot water bottles, fresh flowers and Roberts ipod docking stations. There's superfast Wifi too if you just can't do without it for even a weekend. Lizzie’s got a good design eye, so there are bits of vintage and modern artfully placed side by side. Altogether, a happy, laid back vibe. It’s a two minute walk into town, and you’re really well placed here for Riveaulx Abbey, Castle Howard and the North York Moors.
How much? £50 per person a night including breakfast.
Kids Stuff? Children over 11
Well placed? A short walk into Helmsley for shops, markets and the lovely Helmsley Walled Garden. Don't miss Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard either.
