Sometimes I think the best B & Bs are the ones that feel like you've been invited to stay at your mate's lovely house for a night or two; well that's what this place is like.
It's actually quite an ordinary looking spot, a regular red brick Victorian terrace in a quiet street five minutes walk from the centre of town, but the small, abundant cottage garden at the front is sweet and the paintwork smart. However, nothing can prepare you for the treat to come; leather sofas in a white damask-lined lounge, crystal chandeliers in the huge, glamorous bedroom and 400 thread count organic cotton on the monster bed - truly luxurious, and out of the blue.
A less unexpected but nonetheless charming bathroom with the original enamel roll top bath and period plumbing is a short hop down the corridor, and a second, smaller, rather French bedroom is at the back, overlooking the lovely long garden and across the playing fields beyond.
Barbara and Bill Cross (warm, funny and arty) saved the house from dereliction 25 years ago and brought their five kids up here, so no wonder it's got such a homely vibe, despite the chandeliers! Bill's a great cook, keen as mustard, and delivers a cracking organic breakfast with great style and wit. Eat in the traditional dining room or the funky, light-filled conservatory. A peaceful place with a lot of heart. MW
How Much? £80
Kids Stuff? Just ask
Well placed? Ten minutes walk into town
Good grub? Bill used to work at Betty's so the breakfasts are spot on. For dinner you can splash out at the Old Deanery by the cathedral or go casual at Lockwoods on North Street.
