This is the best fun you can have with your clothes on. Four decommissioned 1970’s railway carriages sit side by side overlooking open rolling countryside eleven miles from York, and have been imaginatively kitted out, with comfort catered for in spades. So two birds have been hit with the same stone; the weekender’s lust for luxury and whatever it is the trainspotter gets out of it - bingo! Interiors are sleek, with blonde wooden floors, funky bedrooms, cutting edge modern kitchens and top-end bathrooms. Garden designer Lizanne & hubbie David are the brains (and the brawn) behind this, and it’s hard to imagine how they’ve configured the space; suffice it to say they’ve done an extraordinary job. There's even a hot tub! Beeching will be turning in his grave .. Skipwith Common is the largest wetland heath in the north, and there’s tons of wildlife to be spotted; Natural England run guided walks through the summer, and it’s two-wheels-good with 26 miles of tracks that criss-cross the land. Plus you’re a 20 minute drive from the centre of York. Pity the train can’t take the strain. MW
How Much: £330 - £740 per week
Kids Stuff: Yep. Plenty of room for the kids, and the garden and land around is very child-friendly.
Well placed: York and all its delights is a mere eleven miles/20 mins away.
Good Grub: The Drovers is a good, old fashioned pub a short walk through the woods. Food is fresh, plentiful and good value. But the carriage kitchens are better than the one you’ve got at home, so make an effort, buy good produce from the Jug & Glass deli in nearby Bubwith, and eat it on your ‘balcony’ overlooking the glorious countryside.
